-Freesia
Freesia is a genus of 14-16 species of flowering plants in the family
Iridaceae. They are herbaceous plants which grow from a corm 1-2.5
cm diameter, which sends up a tuft of narrow leaves 10-30 cm long,
and a sparsely branched stem 10-40 cm tall bearing a few leaves
and a loose one-sided spike of fragrant narrowly funnel-shaped flowers.
Freesias are very
popular garden plants, grown for their often strongly scented flowers.
-Iris
Iris is a genus of
between 200-300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers which
takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the
wide variety of flower colours found among the many species. Their
habitats are considerably varied, ranging from cold regions into
the grassy slopes, meadowlands, stream banks and deserts.
-Lilies
Lilies are native
to the northern temperate regions. They are commonly adapted to
woodland
habitats and are large flowered garden plants. In general they prefer
moderately acidic or lime-free soils. Many species are widely grown
in the garden in temperate and sub-tropical regions. Sometimes they
may also be grown
as potted plants. A large number of ornamental hybrids have been
developed. They can be used in herbaceous borders, woodland and
shrub plantings, and as a patio plant.
-Snapdragons
Antirrhinum is a genus of plants, more commonly known as snapdragons
due to a resemblance
to the face of a dragon that opens and closes its mouth when properly
squeezed (thus the 'snap'). Snapdragons are annual plants and do
best in full or partial sun.
They are available in a range of heights: dwarf (6-8 inches), medium
(15-30 inches) and
tall (30-48 inches). Plant them in a soil that drains well to prevent
the roots from rotting.
-Roses
The flowers of most species roses have five petals divided into
two distinct lobes and are usually white or pink, though in a few
species yellow or red. Beneath the petals are five sepals. These
may be long enough to be visible when viewed from above and appear
as green points alternating with the rounded petals. Rose prickles
are typically sickle-shaped
hooks, which aid the rose in hanging onto other vegetation
when growing over it. Roses thrive in temperate climates, though
certain species and cultivars can flourish
in sub-tropical and even tropical climates, especially when grafted
onto appropriate root-stock.
-Sunflowers
The sunflower is an annual plant native to the Americas in the family
Asteraceae, with a large flower head. The stem of the flower can
grow up to 3 meters tall, with the flower head reaching 30 cm in
diameter. What is usually called the flower is actually
a head of numerous flowers crowded together.
